UN Commission for Human Rights Continued Discussions on Eritrea Report
Thursday, 25 June 2015 10:18 Written by EPDP Information OfficeAgain on Tuesday, 24 June, the 29th session of the UN Commission for Human Rights continued discussions on the Eritrea agenda. Comment and question session on the report of the UN Commission of Inquiry was followed by a hearing to the presentation of Ms Sheila Keetharuth, in her capacity as the UN Special Rapporteur , in which she gave special focus to the ongoing destruction of family fabric in Eritrea.
The morning session of the Commission listened to interventions by 17 countries and 8 renown human rights organizations. All speakers aired categorical condemnations of the human rights and political abuses of the Eritrean regime and supported every aspect of the Commission of Inquiry’s report. Only four delegations (Iran, Sudan, Venezuela and Cuba) spoke against the report.

Speakers in support of the report, which included countries like UK, France, Austria, Spain and others, continued to express their shock about the dire human rights condition in Eritrea and many delegations voiced their request for further investigation on violations that could constitute crimes against humanity.
The Eritrean regime also received severe condemnations by speakers representing international NGOs like Amnesty international and Human Rights Watch, which have been following the situation in Eritrea for a long time. UN Commission Shocked by Report on Eritrea and by threats against UN Experts
Tuesday, 23 June 2015 22:03 Written by EPDP Information Office“Dire Eritrea situation should no longer be Ignored” - Mike Smith
At the start of its Eritrea meeting Tuesday afternoon, 23 June, the UN Commission of Human Rights was shocked by the revelations on the situation in Eritrea as well as by harassment reportedly directed against the UN fact-finders on Eritrea by “unknown” assailants in Geneva.

It was before inviting the UN Commission of Inquiry on Eritrea to introduce the report that the meeting chairman informed the delegations of nearly 200 countries in the hall that UN Commission of Inquiry members Mr. Mike Smith, Ms Sheila Keetharuth and Mr. Victor Dankwa have received threats to their lives in their hotel as well as in the streets of Geneva in the last two days and that the Swiss authorities are taking appropriate measures to protect their safety. The head of the Eritrean delegation, Mr. Tesfamichale Gherhatu, said he had no previous knowledge of the report, “but if true, it is sad” that it happened.
When invited to the podium, the chairman of the Eritrea inquiry commission, Mr. Smith, made a strong introductory statement to the 483-page report by listing some of the harrowing crimes against one’s own people and unreservedly condemning the perpetrators of those unbelievably excessive abuses not seen being employed anywhere in the world”. He hoped their actors would one day be accounted for their acts. Mr. Smith added that the country under report is ruled by “the most repressive” regime in the world today and that the “dire situation in Eritrea should no longer be ignored”.
Mr. Smith also warned that “human rights conditions must be at the forefront” of any future relation with the regime in Eritrea, adding that “little is changing in the country” to this day.

In his rebuttal, the Eritrean delegate tried to “falsify” the scathing UN report by claiming a concerted conspiracy of “big enemies” of Eritrea and the so-called state of “no-war-no-peace” that his country is forced to live under. The meeting chairman stopped and warned Mr. Gerhatu not to use unacceptable language like “travesty of justice” in his accusations against the UN Commissioners who prepared the report after consulting 550 witnesses and receiving 160 written submissions from victims and eyewitnesses.
When the flour was open for discussion on the report, a large number of the 47 members of the UN Commission of Human Rights listed their country names to make interventions.. So far, only 8 of those in the list could get time to make statements. Out of these only China expressed sympathies with the regime in Asmara.
Others made uncompromising condemnations of what is going in Eritrea. The speakers were delegates of the European Union, the United States, Australia, Ghana, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Djibouti. The seven delegations fully supported the report of the Inquiry Commission on Eritrea and speaker after speaker called for “brining to justice” all the alleged perpetrators by any means possible. The Djibouti delegation revealed that Cameroon and Djibouti are drafting a motion to the UN Commission of Human Rights so that the alleged crimes against humanity in Eritrea can be further investigated.
The meeting on Eritrea will continue as of 9am Wednesday, 24 June 2015

Eritreans in North America Urge the UN to Take Action on PFDJ, Africa’s Most Abusive Regime
Monday, 22 June 2015 18:54 Written by EPDP information officeAt a time when the excessive human rights abuses of the dictatorial regime in Eritrea are being further exposed through UN and other reports, Eritreans in North America did not only hold a massive demonstration in Washington DC but also sent a petition to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urging him to use his good offices “to help set in motion a thorough investigation on the cause that is driving refugees” from their homeland.
It is to be recalled that the UN Commission of Inquiry submitted its written report on Eritrea and that the Human Rights Council is already considering approval of the document as it is. The report notes that the Eritrean regime has been engaged in abuses that can be considered as “crimes against humanity”. The petition by Eritreans in North America, therefore, asks the UN Secretary General the the UN Security Council to take approporiate measures on the extremely abusive regime in Africa.
Below is the full text of the petition. Good reading.
…….
June 19, 2015
His Excellency Mr. Ban Ki-moon
United Nations Secretary-General
United Nations Headquarters
New York, N.Y.
Dear Mr. Secretary-General:
We preface our letter with our-heart-felt good wishes to you in all the very important duties you are performing as a world leader. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and all those who collaborate with you in all the noble efforts.
We are writing you as a matter of great urgency, on behalf of hundreds of thousands of our unfortunate Eritrean compatriots. We note with great appreciation the expression of sympathy and grave concern that you voiced following the tragic drowning of hundreds of Eritreans near the Island of Lampedusa some twenty months ago. Indeed, we believe that your voice and that of His Holiness Pope Francis helped put such tragedy and its causes on national and international agendas, especially in Europe, leading to a great deal of debate and soul-searching.
While we welcome these promising developments, unfortunately, we believe that they stopped short of what needs to be done in order to find a lasting solution to such tragedies and the causes that trigger them. The flow of refugees continues unabated and more people have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea, despite the efforts at naval intervention to save lives. We strongly believe that the international community and Europe in particular, needs to translate the expressions of good will voiced in the wake of the Lampedusa tragedy to more concrete actions. Such actions should begin by addressing the causes of the massive migration of refugees from Africa and the Middle East.
In that spirit, and focusing on the Eritrean refugees, we urge you to bring the considerable moral weight carried by your office to bear on the specific tragedy that has befallen on our unfortunate nation—Eritrea. The cause of the massive exodus of Eritreans is the wrong policy and dangerous politics pursued by the government of Mr. Isaias Afwerki. Of all the wrong policies of the government that have devastated a once promising nation, the most egregious is the so called National Service, which has pinned down hundreds of thousands of Eritrean youth in what can only be described as forced servitude. Eritrean youth, the cream of the nation, have wasted, and are wasting, their lives in a pointless and unending service. Thousands have chosen to escape from this servitude at huge risk to their lives, including those who perished in the Mediterranean Sea. Though this servitude is the worst policy pursued by the government, we need to understand the overall context of the nature of the state under which it is practiced.
People who expressed any criticism against the government have been severely punished; many have died in detention. It is generally known that a once promising country has been turned into a police state and the fervent hopes and aspirations of a whole generation of Eritreans have been dashed on the rock of wrong polices and dangerous politics of a government led by an unelected President. The recent U N Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in Eritrea found “that systematic, widespread and gross human rights violations have been and are being committed under the authority of the Government. Some of these violations may constitute crimes against humanity.”
In the prevailing conditions of lawlessness families of thousands of prisoners do not know where their loved ones are incarcerated, do not know if they are dead or alive, do not have the right to visit them or for doctors and lawyers to see them. The young are particularly vulnerable and many prefer risking death remaining in conditions of endless servitude wasting their precious lives. This is the condition that is forcing thousands to flee their country in search of refuge abroad. Unless and until this condition is properly and quickly addressed, the “refugee problem” will continue with more Lampedusa-like incidents. We are, therefore, appealing to you, Mr. Secretary-General, to use your good offices to help set in motion a thorough investigation on the cause that is driving refugees from their beloved homeland. Your leadership, along with that of H.H. Pope Francis, and with the support of leaders of the European Union, African Union, and individual governments, is needed to bring this tragedy to an end. We implore you to take speedy steps toward the accomplishment of this objective.
On June 19, 2015, Eritreans and friends of Eritrea are demonstrating in Washington,
D. C., in support of the people in Eritrea and against the dictatorship in Eritrea.

Planned German Delegation to Eritrea Urged to Look into Facts Carefully
Thursday, 18 June 2015 12:58 Written by EPDP-EHRRAJoint EPDP-EHRRA Press Statement
The German Minister for Economic Development and Cooperation, Dr. Gerd Mueller, is planned to visit Eritrea soon leading a Federal German delegation intending to talk to authorities in Asmara. The minister was already warned by a joint statement of German parties in the Bundestag (Federal German Parliament) that he should “not come back with a report based on bogus promises and statements made by some representatives of Eritrean tyrant”.
On their part, the Eritrean Human Rights and Refugee Advocacy (EHRRA), a German-based and legally registered non-profit charity, and the Eritrean People’s Democratic Party (EPDP), urged the German Minister for Economic Development and Cooperation and the German coalition government to refrain from prolonging the suffering of the Eritrean people by engaging in appeasement with and support to the evil regime in Asmara. The message was conveyed in a joint memo dated 17 June 2015.
Economy Minister Dr. Mueller and Foreign Minister Steinmeier receive joint EHRRA-EPDP appeal.
The joint memorandum was prepared by seizing the opportunity of the planned visit to Eritrea by Dr. Gerd Mueller as well as the strong Bundestag discussion on the situation of human rights in Eritrea and its strong support to the damning report issued by the UN Commission of Inquiry which is about to be adopted soon at the 29th Session of the 47-member UN Commission for Human Rights.
is about to be ad, the Minister for Economic Development and Cooperation. German We, presenters of this modest appeal to your esteemed office, are an Eritrean political party in exile that struggles for democratic change and a Germany-based and registered non-profit charity advocating for human rights and soliciting tangible support for Eritrean refugees everywhere, in particular those in Europe and the Horn of Africa region. We have taken this initiative in light of the recent UN Human Rights Commission report; the timely debate of the German Bundestag on the situation in Eritrea as well as Your Excellency’s planned mission to Eritrea in the coming few days.
The joint EPDP-EHRRA memorandum, which was also copied to Mr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the German Foreign Minister, and through him to the Federal Government, made it clear that appeasement with and unconditional support to the dictatorial regime in Asmara will not solve the problem but, instead, prolong the suffering of the Eritrean people.
The memorandum also urged the German Government and its Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation to seriously consider taking action on the following requests:
- The Federal German Government to oppose any gesture of appeasement and support to the dictatorship in Eritrea;
- Germany to start an open engagement with Eritrean political and civil society non-state actors in the diaspora with the aim of empowering them to take part in a democratic transition in Eritrea;
- Your esteemed Ministry (i.e. the Federal German Government) to take the initiative of establishing a solid programme for Eritrean refugees in Eastern Sudan and Northern Ethiopia by involving the support of EU and UN agencies. Such a huge programme for thousands of desperate refugees should include not only the provision of adequate food, shelter, health facilities and security, but also basic academic and vocational education to the big number of young Eritrean refugees in the Horn of Africa. Additional resources to this package programme can be obtained by rechanneling the development assistance funds suspended from reaching the Asmara regime.

17 June, 2015
Dear Dr. Mueller,
We, presenters of this modest appeal to your esteemed office, are an Eritrean political party in exile that struggles for democratic change and a Germany-based and registered non-profit charity advocating for human rights and soliciting tangible support for Eritrean refugees everywhere, in particular those in Europe and the Horn of Africa region. We have taken this joint initiative in light of the recent UN Human Rights Commission report; the timely debate of the German Bundestag on the situation in Eritrea as well as Your Excellency’s planned mission to Eritrea in the coming few days.
At the outset, allow us, Your Excellency, to express our deepest gratitude to what the German Parliament/Bundestag has done in the way of highlighting the human suffering in Eritrea and the plight of the refugees who are victims of an extreme form of dictatorship unparallel in the whole of Africa. To our great satisfaction, the debate in the Bundestag did not only warmly welcome the report of the UN Commission of Inquiry on Eritrea that aptly described the humanitarian disaster in the country with acts constituting crimes against humanity, but it also urged international protection for those Eritreans fleeing the country in fear and in desperation.
Dear Dr. Mueller,
You are fully aware that Eritrea’s autocratic leader, Mr. Isaias Afworki, and his small clique denied our people the rights that they aspired to enjoy after a 30-year costly liberation struggle that ended in 1991. Sadly, the last 24 years under the repressive regime had been disastrous. The end result is the ongoing societal breakdown of a highly militarized Eritrea that will bring more suffering to its people, to the region as a whole and go far beyond it.
The vast majority of Eritreans believe that appeasement with the dictatorship in their country will not solve the problem. Supporting the dictatorship, like what the EU is doing now, will only empower the regime and prolong the suffering of the Eritrean people.
Therefore, under the renewed momentum and encouraging attention to the problem in Eritrea, we take the liberty of submitting to Your Excellency, and by copy to the Foreign Ministry, to the German Government, the following modest requests for timely action:
- The Federal German Government to kindly oppose any gesture of appeasement and support to the Eritrean dictatorship;
- Germany to start an open engagement with Eritrean non-state actors in the diaspora with the aim of empowering them to take part in a democratic transition in their country;
- The Federal German Government and your esteemed Ministry, to initiative the establishment of a solid programme for Eritrean refugees in Eastern Sudan and Northern Ethiopia by involving the support of EU and UN agencies. Such a multi-purpose and wide programme for thousands of desperate refugees should include not only the provision of adequate food, shelter, health facilities and security, but also give basic academic and vocational education to the big number of young Eritrean refugees in the Horn of Africa. Additional resources to this package programme can be obtained by rechanneling the development assistance funds long suspended from reaching the Asmara regime because of its bad human rights record.
Hoping that Your Excellency and the Federal Government will give the appropriate attention and timely consideration to the contents of this joint appeal of EPDP and the EHRRA, we remain.
Respectfully yours,
Wolde-Yesus Ammar, Tzehaie Kubrom,
Head, EPDP Foreign Relations Office Chairman, the EHRRA
