This conference was held at a sensitive stage where rapid political changes and alignment of forces are taking place in the region. The North American assembly in terms of its heavy responsibility, discussed various topical and important issues and passed resolutions and recommendations accordingly.
At the opening of the session, the Chairman of the EPDP, Mr. Gerezgiher Tewolde, delivered a brief welcome speech and a summary of the holistic prevalent situation. Following that, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the North American regional conference, Mr. Yemane Fitwi, presented the agendas for discussion ensuing approval by the participants.
The North American conference discussed in detail the draft report of the Regional Committee Offices, which had already been circulated to the foundations, as the first item. Likewise, the conference heard and discussed meeting activities and financial report of the branches presented by the Regional General Auditor of the EPDP. It then unanimously approved the reports as a party document with all amendments made. According to the report, it passed decisions on important points that it believes should be done in a foreseeable future. One of the issues that the conference paid attention to was strengthening the internal capacity of the party stressing that it should be fulfilled to its entire extent by the party membership to achieve success of the 5th Congress of the EPDP in the coming year.
After completing the reports, the meeting discussed the following important and topical issues under the guidance of the three-member secretariat appointed to chair the conference.
The North American Region of the EPDP conducted a necessary assessment based on the decisions of its previous regular and emergency meetings. In this assessment, it recalled the June 2017 EPDP official proposal for working in unison where the party has been engaged with all political forces the last three years. The Congress strongly called on all Eritrean forces of change to make their contribution in this regard.
The North American Region of the EPDP took extensive time to assess another issue that has been developing in the region and has an impact on the Eritrean cause. The Congress also noted that the Ethiopian government is engaged in occupational and expansionist fashion to stir up war on the one hand and the PFDJ regime is becoming the main destroyer of peace and stability by engaging in regional alliance and conspiracies to merely extend its grip in power by defying the inherent interest of the Eritrean people.
The conference discussed the plight of Eritrean refugees in all corners of the world. Particularly, it explored some of the problems faced by Eritrean refugees in the African and Middle Eastern regions.
As per the EPDP constitution the North American Region of EPDP conference democratically elected a seven-member Regional Committee, one reserve and one General Auditor to lead for the next two years.
At the conclusion, the conference commended members and supporters of the EPDP for their material and morale contributions. In the future, we will continue to work to have the principles of the EPDP realized in all aspects, especially for the success of the upcoming 5th Congress by calling on all members and supporters to increase their contribution. It also called on the people of Eritrea to continue its unwavering struggle for justice, freedom and stability.
Let’s fight for constitutional governance, democracy and development!
