On 13 October 2018, EPDP Chairman Menghesteab Asmerom led a public seminar in the southern German city of Stuttgart at which seminar participants pledged to redouble efforts for joint action to salvage the hard-won Eritrean sovereignty nowadays under threat of treason by its own ruling clique.

Opened by welcoming remarks of Mr. Tesfamariam Kibreab, chairman of the EPDP sub-zone in Germany, the public meeting was attended also by members of the ad hoc committee for joint coordination of Eritrean political organizations found in the Stuttgart region.

At his presentation in the seminar, the EPDP Chairman talked extensively about hot developments in the world and the region, of course including the fast changing Ethio-Eritrean relations. He also seized the opportunity of explaining the 2 October meeting of Eritrean justice seekers with German civil society participants in Berlin.

 Mr. Menghesteab Asmerom saluted the positive actions taken by Ethiopian authorities that included their decision to fully abide by the Algiers Agreement and the final and binding border ruling and their widening of the political space in their country.

On the contrary, he said, the one-man dictatorship in Eritrea did not only decide to keep Eritrea the same old prison of its people, but also dropped calls for border demarcation and instead engaged itself in mysterious deals that are feared to be compromising Eritrean sovereignty.

The EPDP Chairman further deplored the secret deals being made with the Gulf Coalition countries in which the Eritrean people have say. However, those deals being forged by an illegitimate regime are being vehemently opposed by Eritreans everywhere. The bold voice of former finance minister, Mr. Berhane Abrehe from inside Asmara was cited as a good example of the popular resistance. although their resolve to oppose everything being done by the repressive regime

Mr. Kibreab Mesghena, a representative of the ad hoc committee for joint work in the Stuttgart region, was given the opportunity to explain points of agreement and activities made between sister organizations since the Frankfurt Festival of last summer.

 In the public discussion, seminar participants strongly condemned the reported ongoing secret deals of the Asmara regime and its failure to pursue the implementation of the border ruling. They also hailed the Berlin meeting with German authorities and hoped that Eritrean political and civil society activists would do their utmost to make aims of that Berlin meeting a resounding success.

ሓው መንግስተኣብ ኣስመሮም፡ ሰዲህኤ ንሰላም፡ ዲሞክራስን ፍትሕን ንምርግጋጽ ዝቃለስ ሰልፊ ስለዝዀነ፡ ኣብ መንጐ ኤርትራን ጐረባብቲ ሃገራትን ኣብ መንጐ ኤርትራን ሰላም ክሰፍን ድሌቱን ባህጉን ምዃኑ ገሊጹ። መንግስቲ ኢትዮጵያ፡ ናይ ፖለቲካን ሕልናን እሱራት ምፍታሑ፡ ንተቓወምቱ ናብ ውሽጢ ሃገር ኣትዮም ብሰላማዊ ኣገባብ ክቃለሱ ምፍቃዱን ንውዕል ኣልጀርስን ብይን ኮሚሽን ዶብን ብዘይ ቅድመ-ኵነት ኣብ ግብሪ ከውዕል ምቕባሉን ብርግጽ ሰላም ንምስፋን ዝሕግዝ ኣወንታዊ ስጕምታት ምዃኑ ኢዩ ዝርኢ ኢሉ።

ኣብ ኤርትራ ዘሎ ዲክታቶርያዊ ስርዓት ግን፡ ንሰላም ዘይኰነስ፡ ዕድመ ስልጣኑ ንምንዋሕ ክብል፡ ንተቓወምቱ ኣብ ምእሳር፡ ንጕዳይ ዶብ ምሕንጻጽ ብዝምልከት ንዘይተወሰነ ግዜ ተወንዚፉ ክጸንሕ ብምስምማዕ፡ ተቓወምቱ ንዝዋስእሉ ባይታታት ከስፍሕ ዘይኰነስ ከጽብብ፡ ንልዑላውነት ኤርትራ ዘድፍር ስምምዓት ክገብርን ናይ ግዳም ሓይልታት ወተሃደራዊ መደበራት ክድኩንን ኢዩ ዝርከብ ዘሎ ኢሉ።

ኣብ ርእስ’ዚ፡ እዚ ኣብ ቀርኒ ኣፍሪቃ ዝግሃድ ዘሎ ሓድሽ ምዕብልናታት፡ ምስ’ቲ ኣብ ማእከላይ ምብራቕን ዓለምናን ዝካየድ ዘሎ ናይ ረብሓን ጽልዋታትን ናይ ምስፋሕ መደባት ዝተኣሳሰረ ምዃኑ እውን ብዝርዝር ገሊጹ። ኢትዮጵያን ኤርትራን ኣብ ክንዲ ኣብ ሕብረት ኣፍሪቃ ኣብ ስዑድያ ከይዶም ምፍርራሞም፡ ውጽኢት ናይ’ቲ ግዳማዊ ድርኺትን ተጽዕኖን ምዃኑ ኣስሚርሉ።

እዚ ብዘይኣፍልጦ ህዝቢ ኤርትራን ፖለቲካዊ ሓይልታቱን ግልጽነት ብዝጐደሎ ኣገባብ ብስቱር ዝኽይድ ዘሎ ስምምዓትን ውዕላትን፡ ንሃገርና ኤርትራ ናብ ዘይተፈልጠ መጻኢ ዘምርሕ ሓደገኛ ጕዕዞ ምዃኑ ድማ ኣስሚርሉ።

ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ድማ፡ ካብ’ዚ ሻቕሎት’ዚ ተበጊሱ፡ ነቲ ብስርዓት ኢሳያስ ዝውሰድ ዘሎ ስጕምትታት ክቃወምን ክጠራጠርን፡ ዶብና ብዘይ ውዓል ሕደር ኣብ ግብሪ ክውዕል ክጠልብን ኢዩ ዝርከብ ዘሎ ኢሉ። ኣብ ርእስ’ዚ፡ ነቶም ነቲ ስርዓት ዓው ኢሎም ዝቃወሙ ዘለዉ ከም በዓል ሚኒስተር ፋይናንስ ነበር ተጋ. ብርሃነ ኣብርሀ ዘለዎ ናእዳን መጐስን ድማ ገሊጹ።

ንግዝያዊት ሽማግለ ምውህሃድ ተቓወምቲ ውድባት ኤርትራ ኣብ ጀርመን ወኪሉ መግለጺ ዝሃበ ሓው ክብርኣብ ምስግና ድማ፡ እቲ ካብ ፈስቲቫል ፍራንክፈት 2018 ጀሚሩ ክሳብ ሎሚ ኣብ መንጐ’ቶም ኣብ ጀርመን ዝርከቡ ወከልቲ ተቓወምቲ ውድባት ዝተኻየደ ርክባትን ተበጺሑ ዘሎ ኣወንታዊ ስምምዓትን ብዝርዝር  ኣብሪሁ። ኣብ’ቲ ኣኼባ ተሳቲፍሞ ዝነበሩ ኣባላት እታ ሽማግለ እውን ተወሳኺ መብርሂታት ሂቦም።

ኣብ መወዳእታ ካብ ኣኼበኛታት ዝቐረበ ርእይቶታት ብሓው መንግስተኣብ ኣስመሮምን ሓው ክብርኣብ ምስግናን መልስታት ተዋሂቡ።

ኣኼበኛታት፡ ነቲ ስርዓት ኢሳያስ ዝኸዶ ዘሎ ንህዝብና ዝበታትንን ንልዑላውነትና ኣብ ዋጋ ዕዳጋ ዘእቱን ጕዕዞ ተቓወምቱን ኰነንቱን ምዃኖም ደጋጊሞም ኣረጋጊጾም። ዶብና ብዘይ ቅድመ ኵነትን ብዘይ ውዓል ሕደርን ክሕንጸጽ ድማ ጸዊዖም። ከምኡ’ውን፡ ብተቓወምቲ ውድባት፡ ሰልፍታትን ሲቪላውያን ማሕበራትን ኣብ ጀርመን ዝካየድ ዘሎ ምቅርራባት ደገፍቱ ምዃኖምን ንምዕዋቱ ኵሉ ዝከኣሎም ክገብሩ ምዃኖምን ተመባጺዖም። ንዋዕላ በርሊንን ውጽኢትን ድማ ኣድናቆቶም ድሕሪ ምግላጽ፡ ኣብኡ ተመዚዛ ዘላ ግዝያዊት ኮሚቴ ብዕቱብነት ክትተሓሓዞ ተላብዮም።

ሓው መንግስተኣብ ኣስመሮም፡ ኣብ መዛዘሚ ቃሉ፡ “እዚ ኣኼባ’ዚ፡ ካብ ቅድሚ ሕጂ ዝርኣኽዎ ኣኼባታት ናይ ደለይቲ ፍትሒ ፍሉይ ዝገብሮ፡ ኣርኣእይኡን ገምጋሙን ኣብ ህልዊ ኵነታት ኤርትራ ሓደን ዝሰመረን ምዃኑን ኢዩ። ብሓሳብ ደረጃ ኣብ ሓደ ምምጻእ ማለት ድማ፡ ሓቢርካ ብግብሪ ንምውሳእ ዘኽእል በሪ ስለዝዀነ፡ ብወገናይ ኣዝየ ሕጉስ ኢየ” ኢሉ።

ኣኼበኛታት እውን ኣብ ግዜ ዕረፍቶም ይኹን ኣብ’ቲ ንድራር ተባሂሉ ዝቐረበ መግቢ እናበልዑ፡ ሓጐሶምን ተስፋታቶምን ይገልጹ ነበሩ። ኣኼባ ብዝኽሪ ናይ ስውኣት ተዛዚሙ።

At this occasion of the 5th anniversary of the Lampedusa Tragedy of 3 October, 2013, and in connection with the planned visit to Asmara by the Italian Prime Minister, three Eritreans organizations addressed a strong memorandum to the Italian Government expressing “deep regret and disappointment” at Italy’s “repeated failures to help Eritreans” at their hours of difficulty and great need.

Addressed to Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and his Foreign Minister, Enzo M. Milanesi, the message wished to remind the Italian Government that the highly repressive regime in Eritrea “does not deserve to be dignified” by a high-level delegation from Italy before that regime starts to implement at least some of the recommendations of UN Human Rights Council.

The Italian Prime Minister, Mr. Giuseppe Conte, was asked to kindly canceling the visit, or at least consider taking with him to Asmara the 360 bodies of Lampedusa victims for proper burial in Eritrea.  

The Eritrean organizations also referred to instances of Italy’s past failures to help its ex-colony Eritrea. It mentions Italy’s apology to Libya for “past wounds” and a compensation package of US$5 billion it gave to Libya in 2009 as “material and emotional recognition” of Italy’s past mistakes during the colonial period.

Below is the full text of the memorandum addressed to the Italian Government by the three Eritrean organizations, namely, the Eritrean People’s Democratic Party (EPDP); the Eritrean National Salvation (ENS-Hidri), and Unity of Eritreans for Justice (UEJ).

Dear Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte,

At this Commemoration Day of the Lampedusa Tragedy and in relation to the planned visit to Eritrea this month by Italian delegation led by Your Excellency, we, the undersigned members of Eritrean pro-democracy organizations in exile, are addressing this message to you and through you to the Italian Government to express our deep regret and disappointment at Italy’s repeated failures to help Eritreans whom it literally abandoned soon after the end of its colonial rule in 1941.

It is five years today since the occurrence of the Lampedusa Tragedy of 3 October 2013 in which over 360 young Eritreans perished only a few meters from the Italian island of that name. They died because their desperate calls for help were not responded humanely by concerned Italian authorities. And to this day, their bodies remain in underground vaults in southern Italy waiting for proper burial one day back at home in Eritrea.

We are saying, Sir, that the repressive regime in Eritrea does not deserve to be dignified by a visit of a Prime Minister of Italy. The Italian people know very well the sad political and human rights situation in Eritrea and it is distressing to learn that the current Italian Government and Prime Minister Conte are decided to ignore the prolonged suffering of the Eritrean people and make an appeasement with the regime in Asmara by a visit whose simplistic aim may be curbing the flow of refugees from Eritrea before addressing the root causes of the problem itself.

The Italian State was among the supporters of UN decisions on Eritrea, including the resolutions and recommendations of the UN Human Rights Council and the 2016 conclusions of the UN Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in Eritrea. Normally, we would expect Italy to first pressurize the Eritrean regime to address those concerns of the international community before deciding for such an undeserved visit at the level of Italy’s Prime Minister. Presumably, the visit is intended to negotiate points of agreement that would further worsen the plight Eritrean refugees already in Italy.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte,

We wish to re-state here that the majority of Eritreans are of the belief that Italy has not done enough to help Eritreans at their hours of need during the past 77 years. It is a general perception that the sufferings of our people could have been avoided if Italy were to care a little more than it did to its former colony of Eritrea, not to mention Somalia and Libya which are not also in good shape.

It is a common understanding that the Italian State did not even try help Eritreans in the form of compensations, as it did for others. It is to be recalled that on 30 August 2009, the Government of Italy apologized for “past wounds” to Libya and agreed to pay a compensation package of US $5 billion “as a material and emotional recognition of the mistakes that [Italy] has done to [Libya] during the colonial era”. The worst part of it was that the agreement with Libya was made at the cost of many Eritrean refugees condemned to be sent from Italy to Libya’s Moammar Qadhafi who was in turn willing, as he did before that, to forcibly repatriate those helpless refugees back to the repressive regime in Asmara.   We are afraid that this bad scenario of forcible return of refugees to Eritrea could be repeated now in 2018.

We, therefore, appeal to Your Excellency and the Italian Government to kindly cancel the planned official visit to Asmara. But if the visit is not to be avoided, then we at least ask you to kindly consider shipping back to Eritrea for proper burial of the bodies Lampedusa victims that are kept in temporary underground graves in Sicily.

ኣብዚ ጉባአ ናይ ቅድም ኣባላት ማእከላይ ኮሚተኣ 81 ዝነበረ ኦዲፓ ናብ 55 ኣውሪዳቶም ኣላ። ቅድም ኣባላት ማእከላይ ኮሚተኣ 45 ዝነበረ ህወሓት ከኣ ናብ 55 ክብ ኣቢላቶም። እተን ውድባት ኣብዚ ጉባአታተን ናብዚ መበል 11 ጉባአ ናይ ሓባር ግንባር ዝሳተፉ ነፍሲ ወከፈን 250 ኣባላትን ድሕሪ ጉባአ ኣባላት ማእከላይ ቤት ምኽሪ ኢህወደግ ዝኾኑ ካብ ነፍሲ ወከፈን 45 ኣባላትን መሪጸን ኣለዋ፡

እዘን ኣርባዕተ ውድባት ኣብዚ ጉባአታተን ኣዝዩ ሰፊሕ ናይ ምትኽኻእ ስጉምቲ ወሲደን። በዚ መሰረት ብዙሓት ነባራት ካብ ናይ መሪሕነት ኣባልነት ብኽብሪ ከሰናብታ እንከለዋ ብዙሓት ሓደስቲ ከኣ ናብ ሓላፍነት ኣምጼን። ንኣብነት ኦዲፓ ካብቶም ኣብ መሪሕነት ዝጸንሑ 81፣ 16 ጥራይ እንደጋና ናብ መሪሕነት ኣምጺኦም፡ እቶም 39 ግና ሓደስቲ እዮም። ብተመሳሳሊ ኣገባብ ህወሓት 12 ካብ ነባር ኣባላታ ብኽብሪ ከተሰናብት እንከላ፣ ኣዲፓን ደኢህዲምን ከኣ ነፍሲ ወከፈን ልዕሊ ዕስራ ካብ ነባራት መራሕተን ኣፋንየን።

ምስዚ ክነጻጸር እንከሎ ኣብ ኤርትራ ዝገዝእ ዘሎ ጉጅለ ህግደፍ ካብ 1994 ንነጀው ዝኾነ ይኹን ጉባአ፣ ምትኽኻእን ናይ ፖሊሲ ለውጥን ከየርአያ ኣብታ ዝነበራ ተሸኹሉ ዕንክሊል ይብል ከም ዘሎ ዝፍለጥ እዩ።

ንሰላም ዝኾነ ይኹን ሰብ ብዘየገድስ መልክዑን ሕብሩን ዝጸልኣ የልቦን ። እዚ ሰላም ተጎልቢቡ ኣብ መንጎ ኤርትራ ኢትዮጵያን ዝግበር ዘሎ ውዑላት ንታሪኻዊ ክብርን ልዑላውነት ህዝብን ሃገርነት ኤርትራ ንሓደጋ ዘሳጥሕ ንመላእ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ዘሻቕል ዘሎ ኩነት እዩ።

ነዚ ኣብ ሃገርና ዝዝንቢ ዘሎ ናብ ምህላውን ዘይምህላውን ዘመልክት ኣንፈት ንምብራህ ብላዕለዋይ ኣካል ማለት ኣቦ መንበር ሰዲህኤ ኣቶ መንግስተኣብ ኣስመሮም ዝምራሕ ህዝባዊ ኣኼባ ብምምሕዳር ሽማግለ ጨንፈር ደቡብ ሰዲህኤ ዝዳሎ ኣብ ሽቱትጋርት ክካየድ እዩ።

እተን ኣብ ፈስቲቫል ፍራንክፎርት 2018 በብወከልተን ተራኺበን ብሓባር ንምስራሕ ዘቃላሓ ምቕማጠን ኣብ ጀርመን ዝኾና ውድባትን ሰልፍታትን ስቪካዊ ማሕበራትን እነሆ ብዕለት 16.09.2018 ተኣኪበን ሃገር ንምድሓን ብሓባር ክሰርሓ ተሳማሚዐንን 5 ሰብ ዝኣባላታ ግዝይዊ ሽማግለ ከም ዘቖመ ተሓቢሩ።ነዚ ዓቢ ብስራት እዚ ክውን ንምግባርን ዕላማታቱ ንምግላጽን ኣብዚ ዝዳሎ ዘሎ ህዝባዊ ኣኼባ ግዝያዊ ሽማግለ ፖለቲካዊ ሓይልታትን ስቪካዊ ማሕበራትን ብኣካል ክሳተፎ መደብ ተታሒዙ ኣሎ።።

ኣብቲ መብርሂኡ ብሓፈሻ ሰዲህኤ ኣብ መንጎ ኤርትራን ኢትዮጵያን ንነዊሕ ዓመታት ዝጸንሐ ወጥሪ ሃዲኡ ህዝቢ ክልቴን ሃገራት ክራኸብ ምኽኣሉ ከምዝድግፎ ኣስፊሑ ገሊጹ። እንተኾነ እቲ ብዲክታተር ኢሳይያስ ዝቕለስ ኤርትራዊ ወገን ኣብቲ መስርሕ ምሕዳስ ዝምድና ዝኽተሎ ዘሎ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ዘይፈልጦ፣ ዘይመትከላውን ዘይግሉጽን ኣገባብ ተቓውሞ ከም ዘለዎ ብኣብነታት ብምስናይ ገሊጹ። ኣብዚ እዋንዚ ነቲ ናይ ህዝብና ጽምኣት ሰላምን ሕሱም ተነጽሎን ተበሊጹ ህግደፍ ይወስዶም ናይ ዘሎ ስጉምትታትን ውሽጦም ዘይፍለጥ ስምምዓትን፣ መስርሕ ምርግጋጽ ዲሞክራስያዊ ስርዓት ኣብ ኤርትራ ዘደናጉዩ ጥራይ ዘይኮኑ፣ ንኤርትራዊ ልኡላውነት ዝህድዱ ምልክታት ይረኣዩ ምህላዎም እውን ጠቒሱ።

ኣቶ መንግስተኣብ እዚ ዝኸይድ ዘሎ መስርሕ ንድሌትን ህልዊ ኩነታትን ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ዝጓሰየ ምዃኑ፥ ምስ ዘርዘረ፣ እስትራተጅያዊ ኣቀማምጣ ሃገርና ዘብሃጎም ናይ ግዳም ሓይልታት ዘርእይዎ ዘለዉ ምስ ጉጅለ ኢሳይያስ ናይ ምትዕርራኽ ምልክታት ህዝብና ብጽሞና ክከታተሎ ከም ዝግባእ ኣተንቢሁ። ኣብ ኢትዮጵያ ዝካየድ ዘሎ መስርሕ ንኩነታት ኤርትራ ከም ዝጸልዎ ዝጠቐሰ ኣቶ መንግስተኣብ ኣስመሮም፣ ኣተሓሒዙ ኣካይድ ዲክታቶር ኢሳይያስ ናይ ህልኽን ቂምን እምበር ንናይ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ረብሓ ኣብ ግምት ዘእተወን ኣርሒቑ ዝጠመተን ከምዘየለ ገሊጹ።

ኣቶ መንግስተኣብ ኣብቲ ንህጹጽነት ሓቢርካ ምስራሕ ሓይልታት ተቓውሞ ኤርትራ ብዝምልከት ዝሃቦ መግለጺ፥ ሰዲህኤ ኣውጺኡ ይሰርሓሉ ብዛዕባ ዘሎ ኣብ ኣርባዕተ ነጥብታት ማለት፥ ምዕቃብ ልኡላውነት ኤርትራ፣ ምውጋድ ስርዓት ህግደፍን ናይ ጭቆና ትካላቱን ከምኡ እውን ኣብ ምትካል ብዙሕነታዊ ዲሞክራስያዊ ስርዓትን ምውሓስ ኩሉ መሰረታዊ መሰላትን ዘትከለ ናይ ሓቢርካ ምስራሕ እማመ ዝምልከት መብርሂ ሂቡ፥ ኣብዚ እዋንዚ ብመሰረት እዚ እማመ ምስ ዝተወሰና ውድባት ተጀሚሩ ዘሎ መስርሕ ምቅርራብ ተስፋ ዝህብ ምዃኑ ሓቢሩ፣ ሰዲህኤ ምስቶምቅሩባት ኮይኑ ንመጻኢ’ውን ክደፋሉ ምዃኑ ኣረጋጊጹ። ኣተሓሒዙ ከኣ እቲ እማመ ከከም ደረጃኡ ካብ ብሓባር ምስራሕ ጀሚሩ ክሳብ ፍጹም ምትሕንጻፍ ዝኸይድ ምዃኑ ኣብሪሁ። ኣብዚ ገለጻኡ፣ ሎሚ ኪኖ ምውሓስ ዲሞክራሲ ምዕቃብ ኤርትራን ክብራን እውን ኣብ ቅድሜና ተገቲሩ ዘሎ ብደሆ ምዃኑ ብምጥቃስ ዳግማይ መጸዋዕታ ንሓባራዊ ስራሕ ፖለቲካዊ ሓይልታት ኤርትራ ኣቕሪቡ፣

ኣቶ መንግስተኣብ ድሕሪቲ ሰፊሕ መግለጺኡ፣ ንዝቐረቡ፣ “ንደመር ዝብል ኣብ ኢትዮጵያ ዝቃላሕ ዘሎ ጭረሖ ንመን ይምልከት?፣ ጉዳይ ዶብ ኤርትራን ኢትዮጵያን ኣበይ ወዲቑ?፣ ሃንደበታዊ ዝምድና ኤርትራ ምስ ኢትዮጵያ፣ ሶማልን ጅቡትን እንታይን መን ዝደረኾን እዩ?፣ ኣብዚ እዋንዚ ምስ ጉጅለ ዲክታቶር ኢሳይያስ ዝመሓዘዉ ዘለዉ ወገናት ሕቡእ ኣጀንዳዶ ይህልዎምዶ?፣ ህልዊ ዝምድና ኤርትራዊ ተቓውሞን መንግስቲ ኢትዮጵያን ኣብ ከመይ ደረጃ ይርከብ? ዝብሉ ዝርከብዎም ሕቶታት ግዜ ወሲዱ ብዝርዝር መሊሱ፡

ኣብ መወዳእታ ኣኼባኡ ንምጥቕላል ኣብ ዝሃቦ ቃል ኣቶ መንግስተኣብ ኣስመሮም ኣብ ወሳኒ ናይ ታሪኽ ምዕራፍ ከም ዘለና ጠቒሱ ካብዚ ዘለናዮ ብዓውት ንምውጻእ ንውሱናት ወገናት ዝግደፍ ዘይኮነ ንኹሉ ኤርትራዊ ዝምልከት ሃገር ናይ ምድሓን ዕማም ምዃኑ ጠቒሱ፣ ኩሉ ደላይ ፍትሕን ፈታዊ ህዝቡን በብዓቕሙ ክረባረብ ጸዊዑ። ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ንሓቢሪካ ምስራሕ ከተባብዕን ካብዚ መተካእታ ዘየብሉ ምርጫ ንዝርሕቁ ወገናት ከኣ ተጽዕኖኡ ንኽገብርን ከኣ ጸዊዑ።

(Joint Eritrean Memorandum)

In a joint memorandum dated 18 September 2018, three Eritrean organizations urged the new UN Human Rights Commissioner, Ms Michele Bachelet, to keep the Eritrean regime "under close scrutiny” and never allow it to escape accountability on the monstrous human rights abuses it perpetrated against its own people during the past quarter of a century.

Also copied to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and to the African Union Commission chairman, Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, the memorandum asked the UN system and concerned international and regional humanitarian bodies to do more than simply asking the rogue regime in Asmara to end its military conscription project.

The Eritrean message alluded to the case of G-15 prisoners and the tens of thousands of Eritreans prisoners who were joined by ex-Finance Minister Berhane Abrehe on 17 September 2018, and called for the full attention of the UN towards implementing the 2016 findings of the UN Commission of Inquiry and the recommendations of the UN Human Rights Council.

Issued by the Eritrean National Salvation (ENS-Hidri), the Eritrean People's Democratic Party (EPDP), and the Unity of Eritreans for Justice (UEJ), the joint memorandum also referred to the ongoing 'under-the-table-deals' of the unrepresentative Eritrean regime with Ethiopia and other countries and said such deals will not be acceptable to the voiceless Eritrean people.

The joint memorandum emphatically added: "Peace in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea basin can and should start with peace at home. So far this is not the case in Eritrea".

Your Excellency Ms. Michele Bachelet,

Please accept from us, Eritreans struggling for democratic change and justice, heartfelt congratulations for your deserved election to lead the UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), a UN body from which Eritreans expect as much action as they wait for the appropriate action of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to act on the 2016 findings of the UN Commission of Inquiry on Eritrea.

We appreciate, Madam, your 10 September statement in support of the peace accord between Eritrea and Ethiopia although we also expected you to say more than just reminding the repressive Eritrean regime to act on its indefinite military conscription.

What Eritreans still expect from your esteemed office is, Madam High Commissioner, to mobilize the international community towards implementing the decisions of the UN Human Rights Council and the repeated recommendations of the UN Special Human Rights Rapporteur on Eritrea whose periodical updates confirm that nothing is changing in our country. 

Dear OHCHR High Commissioner,

We are taking the liberty of confirming to you that arbitrary arrests and all kinds of criminal abuses are continued to this day in Eritrea, and one finds it needless to remind the OHCHR that the Eritrean regime must be kept “under close scrutiny” until all the abuses are stopped. In this regard, we wish to point out that your esteemed office as well as the UN Secretary General’s office are expected per the conclusions of the UN Human Rights Council to “Ensure accountability for those responsible for serious human rights violations in Eritrea.” Eritreans always find it important to underline that our people are expecting the UN system as a whole and all concerned actors like the African Union to see to it that the border ruling between Eritrea and Ethiopia is implemented as agreed two decades ago, and that no ‘under the table deals’ between the unrepresentative regime in Eritrea and Ethiopia will be acceptable to the Eritrean people. Peace in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea basin can and should start with peace at home. So far this is not the case in Eritrea.

Finally, we wish to note that it was on 18 September, 17 years ago to the day, that the repressive regime in Asmara arrested 11 top officials of the regime and attended their number to the tens of thousands of Eritrean political prisoners and prisoners of conscience who languish in incommunicado prisons without a day at court. Ex-Finance Minister Berhane Abrehe, who recently published a book on the sad situation in Eritrea, was reportedly taken to prison yesterday, 17 September 2018.

That is why, Madam, that Eritreans expect more from the UN system than just asking the Asmara regime to act on its “indefinite military conscription”.
