Eritrean refugees in  2015 reached 400,000 and maintained the country to be among the top 10 refugees producing states of the world. It is also feared that a sizable number of the 2,800 souls that perished in the Mediterranean Sea  in the past six months of the current year alone were Eritreans.

Tribune de Genève, a daily Swiss newspaper, reported  of 28 June that Eritrean refugees who reached Europe in 2015 were the highest after those coming from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.

It was reported that of the 65 million displaced persons in 2015, nearly 41 million were internally displaced persons (IDPs) and over 21 million were refugees. Asylum seekers in industrialized countries in 2015 whose cases were not yet processed reached 3.2 million.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Filippo Grandi, warned that if the causes of displacement are not addressed at home, those problems will be 'exported everywhere'. He hoped that the upcoming world summit on migration and refugees, scheduled for 19 September 2016, will be able to come with concrete solutions to the problems.
