The Eritrean People's Democratic Party (EPDP) commended the recent action of the Dutch House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer) and hoped the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands will take action on the strong resolutions adopted by the country's legislative body.

Dated 8 July, the EPDP memorandum was addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ms. Khadija Arib (Labour Party), and copied to spokespersons of all supportive Dutch parties as well as to the Government via the Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders.

The momo stated that the EPDP and rest of Eritreans struggling for democratic change are "profoundly pleased and touched by this timely consideration of the plight of the Eritrean people" and affirmed that resolutions will " gradually but surely contribute towards bringing about the desired democratic change in our country".

The EPDP message further stated that, based on the resolutions of its parliament, the Government of the Netherlands is now believed to be doing the following:

Eritreans of all walks of life , at home and abroad, will now be pleased to see the Government of the Netherlands:

  • Urging the UN Security Council to fully endorse the UN Inquiry Commission findings in Eritrea and send the perpetrators of those crimes to a relevant court of justice, preferably the International Criminal Court (ICC);
  • Making pressure bear on the EU and others to stop aiding and abetting the repressive and criminal regime in Eritrea;
  • Shutting the offices of the Eritrean regime and its affiliates in the Netherlands;
  • Depriving the Asmara regime from making 2% tax collections and other financial extortions in the Netherlands;
  • Taking stern measures against Eritrean "refugees" in the Netherlands who are supportive of a regime confirmed to have committed crimes against humanity and still doing so; and
  • Protect Eritreans from agents of their "own" government in Eritrea.

MPs (members of parliament) of the ruling coalition of the Labour Party (PvdP) and the Liberal Democrats (VVD) gave their backing to the parliamentary motions summarized above. Also initiating supporting motions for action against the regime in Asmara were MPs of the Green Party, Social Democrats, Socialists, and Christian Democrats.
