In an urgent memo sent to the French President Francois Hollande, the chairman of the Eritrean People's Democratic Party (EPDP), Mr. Menghesteab Asmerom, expressed "profound shock and dismay" to learn about the brutal massacre of innocent civilians in Paris and sent "deep Eritrean sympathies and solidarity with the people and Government of France "at this dark hour in the street of Paris, the City of Lights".

The message was sent on 15 November with a copy to French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius. The EPDP chairman was about to send a message of gratitude to the French President about his latest favourable remarks about the situation in Eritrea but had to delay it due to the sad developments in Paris.

It is to be recalled that President Holland stated told the Valletta Summit on 11 november, at which over 60 leaders from both Africa and the European Union were attending, that Eritrea is a major issue that need to be looked at. He said: " Nobody is talking about it. It is a country that is becoming empty of its own population with unscrupulous leaders who let their people go". He called for a maximum political pressure on the Eritrean leaders who have created this sad situation. Mr. Holland added that on Eritrea, Europe and the rest of the world have "a job to be done which is political and which needs a strict and demanding diplomacy."
