Ethiopia announces arrest of '98 Eritrea sponsored' rebels in last 2 months

Ethiopia’s security forces have disclosed the arrest of 98 ‘Eritrean sponsored anti-peace elements’ in the past two months alone, the state-run FANA Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) reported on Friday.

According to FBC, the west Tigray zonal administration confirmed that the arrested persons were trying to cross into Ethiopia after having received training to execute a mission by Eritrean-based terrorist organizations, Ginbot 7 and Oromo Liberation Front (OLF).

A senior security official of the zone, is reported to have disclosed that the ‘anti-peace elements’ were arrested as a result of coordinated efforts of the defense force and local residents.

‘‘According to him, 15 of them were arrested this week while attempting to enter into the central part of the country to attack socio-economic institutions,’‘ the FBC report added.

Tensions between the two countries have been simmering with the most recent being claims by Ethiopia that Eritrea-backed rebels were behind an attempt to attack the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) project.

Ethiopia has also accused Eritrea of accommodating persons behind the Amhara and Oromia protests that have swept through the country since November 2015. Ethiopia is currently under a state of emergency which was imposed to quell the unrest.

Eritrea achieved independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after decades of armed struggle. In 1998, the two neighbouring countries fought a two-year long war over their disputed border which has claimed the lives of at least 70,000.

The two countries have had tense relations as a peace deal signed in 2000 to end the war has never been fully implemented.

A devastating famine has hit the Horn of Africa. El Nino has taken a terrible toll on the people across the region and Eritrea is no exception. The coming famine across the Horn was covered by the New Statesman a year ago, with predictions of its severity which have tragically come true.

An appeal by the UK’s Disaster Emergency Appeal has raised over £54m four weeks after it was launched. But unlike the victims in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya, the people of Eritrea are unable to benefit from this generosity.

The reason for this tragedy is simple: the Eritrean regime, led by the dictatorial Isaias Afewerki, is refusing all outside help. Denial is official government policy. Quoting the President the official media declared in January 2016: “The country will not face any crisis in spite of reduced agricultural output.”

But evidence of the scale of the suffering, particularly among the children, is now filtering out. It is being smuggled out by men and women of the “Freedom Friday” resistance network, at great personal risk. If they are discovered they will be jailed, indefinitely, and almost certainly tortured.

Nurses and carers working in clinics across the country have been banned from using their cell-phones, but some have dared to take the images below, and sent them abroad, in a desperate attempt to make the plight of these children know.

Picture1

These photographs are from the town of Mendefera. Normally a bustling market town, in the fertile Southern region of Eritrea, it has a range of small scale factories that provide employment and an income.

But villagers in the vicinity, including Areza, Mai Dima, Awha, Adi Quala, Mai Mine, Enda Gergis, Adi Felesti, have been badly hit by the drought. These pictures are from the clinic in Mendefera, to which the children have been brought. The pictures and the information has been anonymized, for their security.

Since January this year 66 children, many of them babies, have been brought into the clinic suffering from acute forms of malnutrition the clinics were unable to cope with. Many revived, but two died and a further four children were sent to Asmara for specialist treatment.

Picture 2They suffered from the swollen bellies typical of kwashiorkor, a severe type of malnutrition – the result of an extreme shortage of protein in their diet.

The symptoms include swollen abdomens, skin disorders (hypo and hyper pigmented skin) and excessive fluid retention throughout the body.

Health workers believe they are only seeing the tip of the iceberg.

Most children are simply not being brought to the clinics and the actual scale of the crisis is much more severe.

A national crisis

In other areas of the country the situation is, if anything, more dangerous.

There are reports of cholera in the area around the western town of Barentu. Villagers are having to draw water from pits dug into the Mereb river.

More than 1,300 patients were registered at one makeshift clinic when these images were smuggled out of the country in October last year. Thirteen deaths had been registered by the health workers. Teams of doctors were sent into the area to try to halt the spread of the cholera while roads were closed, transport halted and movement into and out of the effected areas has been tightly controlled. Members of the local militia, the police and the army were closely restricting movement.

Picture 4

There were reports of medical teams being sent to attend the cholera outbreak in remote areas, leaving their the patients in hospital unattended.

The medics said there is constant pressure from security agents, who warn them warn them not to take any photos not and tell any one about what is taking place.

An aid worker operating inside Sudan described families crossing the border to seek aid. He said that those who arrived spoke of acute shortages of food and water. These people come from the remote regions of western Eritrea where villagers are used to some of the most challenging of circumstances. If they believe it is time to pack up and leave the situation must be very serious indeed.

Government in denial

Obtaining accurate information from Eritrea is extremely difficult, since the government prevents aid agencies and many UN organisations from operating.

As one crisis warning system put it: “The Eritrean government severely restricts the access of humanitarian actors inside the country. Very little is known about humanitarian needs: Unicef estimates that the total affected population is 1.5 million.”

The UN’s children’s agency, Unicef, reported that: “Data from the Nutrition Sentinel Site Surveillance system indicates an increase in malnutrition rates over the past few years in four out of six regions of the country, with 22,700 children under five projected to be affected by severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in 2017.

This crisis was not unforeseen.

Picture5

A year ago, aid agencies were already warning that the situation was looking bleak.

Satellite imagery showed the scale of the looming drought.

Current maps of the region now show no information for Eritrea: it is almost as if the country has vanished from the face of the earth.

Eritreans have become the silent victims of their President’s unwillingness to call for aid, and the inability of the international community to come to their aid.

The 13th annual gathering of an organ in Europe serving the repressive regime in Eritrea was foiled by a joint voice and action of Eritreans in the Netherlands and the support of their compatriots across Europe. Among others, EPDP's condemnatory memo was already in the hands of Dutch authorities by the time the festival activities were about to be launched.  This annual event of the so-called YPFDJ for (Youth wing of the ruling Popular Front for 'Democracy and Justice' in Asmara), scheduled for 13 and 17 April in Veldhoven, Holland, was ordered to shut down  before it could be addressed by Yemane Ghebreab, the senior advisor of the Eritrean dictator, Isaias Afeworki.

The Mayor of Veldhoven and his council took the action on Friday, 14 April, fearing continued violence after the arrest of  some 100 Eritrean protesters near the venue of the event. There were reports (Martin Plaut) that over 2,500 Eritreans from the rest of Europe were to join the protesters in Veldhonven by Saturday 15th April after learning that  at hand was Yemane Ghebreab, suspected to be one of the potential culprits identified in the UN list of perpetrator of "crimes against humanity"  in Eritrea during the past quarter of a century.

The Eritrean People's Democratic Party (EPDP), which never failed in the past to urge Germany, Sweden, Norway, Italy and even the Netherlands, was once against among other voices to ask Dutch authorities not to allow this propaganda outfit of the Eritrean regime to hold a gathering in order to brainwash young Eritreans. Addressed to Mr. Bert Koenders, the Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of the  Netherlands, EPDP's protest memorandum  expressed "dismay and profound disappointment" that the YPDJ festival is allowed a venue in the Netherlands that it did not deserve.

Holland Demo 2

The memo said: "We in the EPDP see the event as an affront to the past  declarations of the Dutch Parliament, the ruling of a Dutch Court against the same group and the firm positions of the Dutch Government against the abuses of the dictatorial regime in Eritrea."

Subject: Protest Memo Against  YPFDJ's Jamboree in the Netherlands

To: H.E. Mr. Bert Koenders, Foreign Minister,

CC: Dutch Government and Concerned Authorities,

The Kindom of the Netherlands,

The Hague

Dear Foreign Minister Koenders,

It is with dismay and profound disappointment that we, in the Eritrean People’s Democratic Party (EPDP), a mainstream organization struggling for democratic change in Eritrea, address to your esteemed Ministry this message concerning the holding in the Netherlands the 13th festival of the so-called Young PFDJ, an arm of the repressive regime in Eritrea. We see the event as an affront to the past  declarations of the Dutch Parliament, the ruling of a Dutch Court against the same group and the firm positions of the Dutch Government against the abuses of the dictatorial regime in Eritrea.

This group is nothing but a propaganda and security outfit of the Asmara regime whose gatherings in Europe are addressed by the regime officials like Mr. Yemane Ghebreab, who brainwash and poison innocent European children of Eritrean origin with the regime's propaganda of hate and division. Sadly, it is learned that that same person is on his way to Holland to speak at the festival being held between 13 and 17 April, 2017. Mr. Ghebreab is highly likely to be one of those Eritrean officials tipped for legal prosecution for crimes against humanity as established by the UN Commission of Inquiry on Eritrea. The  agents of YPFDJ did not deserve a venue in the Kingdom of the Netherlands for a propaganda event of the Asmara regime.

Your Excellency Mr. Koenders,

There is no doubt that the so-called Young-PFDJ is a carbon copy of the hated Hitlerjugend (Hitler Youth) of the last century. It is well known to you in the Netherlands that the Asmara regime uses the youth and their parents to intimidate those who openly talk against the repressive regime. It was one of the top leaders of this group that  accused a Dutch professor, Mirjam van Reisen, not long ago on false claims of 'libel' with the intent of intimidating and stopping  her from exposing the abuses of the Eritrean regime against its own people.

We feel that the YPFDJ festival being held in the Netherlands is not only a provocation to Dutch support to Eritrean refugees but also an insult to all Eritreans struggling for change and democracy in their country.

Those participants gathered for the festival come from several countries in Europe: parents and relatives of the young persons are hostages of the dictatorship in Eritrea. Therefore, to have a continued contact with the embassies in Europe and to safeguard their interests in Eritrea, the parents must send their sons and daughters to such festival. Even parents inside Eritrea are subjected to intimidation, psychological pressure and threats of vengeance if their sons and daughters in Europe dare fail to appear at the annual event.

Dear Foreign Minister,

We, members of EPDP and other Eritreans opposed to the regime in Asmara, trust you will agree that the envoys of the dictator should not be allowed to poison Eritrean youth and try to make them submit to the malicious propaganda of the regime that is known to be the worst abuser and violator of basic human rights in Africa if not in the entire world.

Hoping that your esteemed Ministry and the Dutch Government will never in the future allow the group to be active in the Netherlands,  we  remain, Sir,

Sincerely yours,

For the Eritrean People's Democratic Party/EPDP/ in exile

(Wolde-Yesus Ammar, Head of Foreign Relations).

The Eritrean People's Democratic Party (EPDP) attended on observer status the 39th Congress of the Swedish Social Democratic Party (SAP) held between 8 and 12 April 2017 in Gothenburg, the country's second largest city after Stockholm.

Representing the EPDP at the Congress was Mr. Zehaie Keleta, the deputy chairman of the Sweden Committee for the EPDP foreign office. Himself a SAP member, the EPDP representative could hold wide-ranging contacts and side-talks with party members and government officials in addition to distributing in an effective manner the solidarity message addressed to the congress by EPDP Chairman, Mr. Menghesteab Asmerom.

The Congress in Gothenburg elected Lena Radstrom Baastad as new Party leader

The EPDP message urged the congress to revisit and put into concrete action its two resolutions on Eritrea adopted at its 37th Congress. It is to be recalled that the two resolutions pledged to support Eritrean non-state actors struggling for democratic change in their country and to take measures towards stopping the Eritrean regime from collectings its illegal 2% tax from Swedes of Eritrean origion and refugees.

During the 39th Congress of the fraternal Swedish SAP party, which is also the leading party in the ruling coalition it formed, Mr. Zehaie Keleta made an impressive outreach with party leaders and government ministers. Besides holding sufficient explanatory talks with Ms. Margot Wallstroem, the Swedish Foreign Minister, and with Mr. Jan Eliasson, a veteran top Swedish politician and former UN deputy secretary general, the EPDP delegate also meet for brief chats with the outgoing and incoming chairwomen of the Swedish party; with ministers of interior, migration/refugees, finance, national defence, the chairman of the Swedish trade unions as well as with the Mayor of Gothenburg.

At its opening, the congress was under the shock of the tragic terrorist act in the Swedish capital of Stockholm that claimed many lives. At the same time, the incident energized the unity and resolve of the party for serious action to strengthen measures on national security and as such agreed for the training of up to 10,000 policemen between now and 2024.

The 350 voting delegates elected by acclamation the 43-year-old Lena Radstrom Baastad to be the new party chairperson.

Resolution adopted by the 39th SAP Congress were based on their long-held social democratic principles.

Eritrean Message to Congress of Fraternal

Swedish Social Democratic Party

8 April 2017

Distinguished Congress Delegates,

This is a modest Eritrean memorandum to your Congress wishing you a successful convention that addresses all the issues listed in your Agenda as well as those issues adopted as future undertakings of parties in the Progressive Alliance of which we in the Eritrean People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) are founding members.

It is with trust and hope for action that we recall the two important resolutions of your 37th Congress in support of Eritreans struggling for democratic change in our country.

It is known to you congress delegates that Eritrea became a sovereign state at the end of long struggle for self-determination and national independence. When Eritrea became independent over a quarter of a century ago, we and our  friends hoped to see a model African state. Sadly, what Eritreans experienced in the last 26 years has been different from their long-awaited dreams for peace, security and democracy. The country still remains without a constitution, without an elected government, without freedom of press, religion, association; without freedom for domestic mobility … and the people are being subjected to all kinds of abuses.

Today's Eritrea leads Africa in being the number one jailer of journalists and violator of basic human and political rights. The shocking picture of cruelty in today’s Eritrea can be illustrated by mentioning cases of thousands of prisoners, including the Swedish Dawit Isaac.

Dear Congress Delegates,

It is time to recall that all freedom-loving progressive forces, including your party, were in the forefront of fighting colonialism several decades ago. However, those same progressive friends did little to help bring about democracy and the rule of law in Africa. We therefore wish to call on you to address that question, and give urgent attention to Eritrea.

The urgent message from us in the EPDP today is the call upon this Congress to support in a concrete manner, and based on its 37th Congress resolutions,  the promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Eritrea through non-state political and civil society actors in exile that are opposed to the repressive regime in the country.

It is also appropriate for this message to refer to the shocking terrorist incident in Stockholm the other day that we condemn in the strongest terms possible. We hereby convey to the affected families and the Swedish nation as a whole our deepest sympathies and condolences.

We once again wish this Congress a resounding success!!

NB: We are proud to pass this modest message to your august Congress through our party member, Mr. Zehaie Keleta, who is also one of your Congress participants.

Respectfully  yours,

Menghesteab Asmerom,

Chairman, Eritrean People's Democratic Party (EPDP) in exile.
