In a joint statement issued on October 1, 2014, six ancient and powerful Eritrean Orthodox Church monasteries of Debre Bizen, Emba Selassie, Debre Sina, Debre Libanos, Debre Tsege Sef’a and Debre Yohannes Metmik (the Baptist) have strongly condemned and excommunicated two topmost government appointed “leaders” of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church.

The excommunicated individuals are the civilian Yeftahe Dimetros Ghebremariam and the cleric Keshi Habtom Rusom Habte, both of whom won notoriety in church circles and in the Eritrean society in general during the last ten years.

The strong condemnation and excommunication of the two persons is believed to be a direct finger pointing of all the wrong doing in the country to the one-man regime of Isayas Afeworki itself.

According to an Eritrean website, Assena.com, the tyrannical regime (read: the dictator)  has already taken desperately trying to save face by removing the two accused persons from their church posts. Yeftahe Dimetors, has been the key figure in the Church following the illegal dethroning of the Eritrean Orthodox Church leader, His Holiness Patriarch Antonios, a decade ago.

The ancient Monastery of Debre Bizen is located a stone’s throw east of Asmara.

The six signatory monasteries of the Eritrean Orthodox Church summarized their charges in seven accusations and informed the Eritrean people to never have any relation with these persons as regards Church affairs.

The Monastery of Emba Selassie, built  on top of precipitous mountain, is located south of Keren.

The statement, so far existing in Tigrinia and expected to be translated to several languages, affirmed that the two persons were the key figures responsible for all the evil acts that bedeviled the Church and left it fragmented and weakened.

Debre Sina

  It stated in sharp and clarion clear wording that:

·         The two individuals repeatedly violated the most venerated laws and rules of the Eritrean Church;

·         Dishonoured and usurped the Patriarchate and its head;

·         Sided  with evil doers in the country and gave them favourable cover;

·         Actively divided and weakened Eritrean monasteries;

·         Sowed confusion and destroyed the unity of the Church;

·         Victimized honest servants of the Church and its followers;

·         Promoted corruption and dishonesty.

Debre Libanos

Translation of the statement in English is expected to be obtained soon.
