In a condolence message to the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), the chairman of the Eritrean People's Democratic Party (EPDP), Mr. Menghesteab Asmerom, expressed sympathies of his party on the passing away of the senior SPD member and former German Chancellor, Helmut Schmidt earlier this week.

Addressed to the SPD chairman, Mr. Sigmar Gabriel, with copies to the German foreign minister, Mr. Mark Steinmeier, and to Mr. Konstantin Woinoff, the coordinator of the Progressive Alliance of which both SPD and EPDP are founding members, the message stated that the late Chancellor's contributions are "remarkable and deeds of lasting pride to his party, the SPD".

EPDP chairman's message went on: " The German Social Democrats and all their friends, world-wide, including us a party in exile, will always remember his efforts in building Germany to a European economic powerhouse and his role in Europe's exemplary integration".

The former German Chancellor died on 10 November in his hometown of Hamburg at the age of 96. Helmut Schmidt, a chain smoker and lover of straight-talk, was from the center-left of the SPD and known for his reality-based politics.
