The newly-elected 33-person central council of the Eritrean People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) elected by acclamation at its first regular meeting on 16 August 2015 the incumbent party chairman, Mr. Menghesteab Asmerom, for another one-year term.

Mr. Menghesteab Asmerom, an indefatigable freedom fighter still carrying on without let up the unfinished people’s cause that he started in the mid-1970s, was first elected to chair EPDP in the summer of 2012. The party’s central council elects its chairpersons and members of the executive committee every year.

The EPDP Central Council itself, which also consists of four reserve members, was elected at the party’s second congress held during the month of July 2015. Due to the wide-spread presence of party members, the congress was organized in two places: one in Gondar in mid- July for delegates from the Sudan and Ethiopia, and the second part of the congress was held in Wiesbaden, Germany, between 26 and 30 July 2015. The voting outcomes of the two-part congress showed that all five women candidates were elected. The council now consists of 36% of new members to the council, among them a good number of young persons.

During this regular meeting, the 5th since the first party congress of 2011, the EPDP Central Council will continue holding several sessions in which it will elect, inter alia, new members of the executive committee, the general auditor, performance controller and approve one-year programs of all party organs.

It is to be recalled that the EPDP was declared on 1 January 2010 as merger of significant wings from the two major organizations of the liberation struggle era. During its short history of five and a half years, the EPDP leaderships were headed by Messrs Woldeyesus Ammar, Hamid Dirar and Menghesteab Asmerom for the past three years.
