EPDP Congress in Wiesbaden, Germany, Continues

During its second and third days on 27 and 28 July, the second congress of the Eritrean People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) now underway in Wiesbaden, Germany, discussed a comprehensive leadership report and the party constitution coordinated by a seven-person secretariat.

The congress secretariat was elected on 27 July consisting of Mr. Fissehaye Hagos of USA who served as its chairman, with Mr. Gherezgeher Tewolde from of Canada; Mr. Tedros Fissehaye from Zambia; Ms Ghenet Habtegerghis from Australia; Ms Alganesh Issac from Sweden; Mr. Ibrahim Atta from Germany, and Mr. Haile Woldu from UK as members of the secretariat.

Following the handing over of a sealed envelope sent from the party congress held in Gondar, Ethiopia, the day’s session heard a comprehensive 29-page report of the EPDP Central Council which was read out by party chairman, Mr. Menghesteab Asmerom.

The report covered activities of the four-year period since the last party congress in 2011. The report evaluated the situation of Eritrea and its people under the dictatorial regime, and party achievements and shortcomings at different levels including in the political, economic, social, information and organizational spheres as well as the situation of the Eritrean opposition organizations.

On 28 July 2015, the congress discussed the draft constitution of the party that will be the basic reference for the coming four years.

Documents still to be discussed during the next three days include the future political programme of the party and political resolutions and recommendations. The congress will finalize on 30 July following an election of the central council which will lead the party for the coming four years.
