On 15 November, Eritrean refugees and residents in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa staged an angry demonstration in front of the headquarters of the African Union and blamed the regional organization for its silence and complicity with dictators by failing to respect its charter and promises to listen and serve the peoples of the continent.

The African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, which was adopted as an international human rights instrument intended to "promote and protect" human rights and basic freedoms in the African continent. Unfortunately, the charter is failing to promote and protect those promised rights and freedoms.

The demonstration, which was also attended by  Eritrean leaders of political organizations and members, including those of the Eritrean People's Democratic Party (EPDP), marched from city centre to the AU offices chanting slogans in support of the Asmara demonstration of 31 October 2017 and demanding release of all  prisoners. The demonstrators saluted the students and parents of the Diaa Islamic school for sparking the event and strongly condemned the futile divide-and-rule tactics of the Asmara region on unfounded religious basis.

The organizing committee of the demonstration submitted a written statement to the African Union whose officials again for the fourth time failed to receive and talk to the demonstration organizing committee. The statement submitted to the Commission of the African Union blamed the failure to receive and talk to leaders of the demonstration and thus charged the AU for abandoning its charger by appeasing with dictatorships like the one in Eritrea.
