Greece: Illegal Immigrant Dies of Cold at Border

THESSALONIKI, Greece --

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) Police in northeastern Greece say a Palestinian man has died of hypothermia after he and other illegal immigrants were stranded on an islet in the middle of a river that forms the border with Turkey.

Fourteen others in the group, who hailed from several countries including Syria and Eritrea, were rescued Monday from the Evros River, which is known as the Meric River in Turkey. They were hospitalized for observation.

The incident occurred a day after two illegal immigrants were reported missing in the area. They are believed to be a 10-year-old girl and 55-year-old man from Afghanistan.

The European Union's border protection agency, Frontex, says the Evros is the busiest crossing point for illegal immigrants trying to reach the EU.
